For adventurous family travels, check out Gulf Shores in Alabama. It’s just like heavenly sugar-white sand beaches, amazing seafood, and the very magic of seeing them play in the surf while little ones squeal.

Mountain Retreats: Where Adventure Awaits

If your family’s more into hiking boots than flip-flops, mountain destinations offer some of the most rewarding family trip ideas out there. The mountains would be your first choice. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park straddles Tennessee and the northern Carolinas and has a very wide and varied range of opportunity-from the very easiest promise of nature walks to strenuous hiking. Furthermore, Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, which are located nearby, jointly provide the perfect mix of outdoor adventure fused with tourist fun intended to make everybody happy in the family.  

Plus, Colorado shouldn’t be sleeping either-Breckenridge and Vail practically turn into a family playground during the summer months. Okay, I agree that skiing is typically what they are known for; however, summer activities are out of this world. Getting to do chairlift rides, alpine slides, and hiking trails where sensational views will literally make you catch your breath is amazing.

Sometimes the best family travel places are hiding in plain sight in our own backyard—or at least within driving distance. Cities offer this incredible smorgasbord of experiences that can satisfy every family member’s interests.

Take San Diego, for instance. It has beaches, world-class museums, Balboa Park, and a zoo that, in my opinion, is the Harvard of animal parks. The weather is so mild, so it can allow you to plan a hassle-free family vacation any time, or whenever you want-a totally last-minute decision! 

Chicago’s another gem that often gets overlooked as a family destination, but it consistently ranks high on my list of creative family trip ideas. Navy Pier, Millennium Park, awesome culinary scene, and architecture that has you tilting your head in wonder. Deep-dish pizza has an inherent American charm that feels peculiar when it’s not shared with your people. 

Weekend Family Trips: Short But Sweet

Not every family adventure needs to involve passport photos and international flights. Some of the most meaningful weekend family trips happen closer to home. Think driveable distances, minimal packing, maximum fun.

There are great state parks for quick getaways with options for cabin rentals, hiking trails, and activities for the whole family. If it’s not Lake George in New York, Myrtle Beach State Park in South Carolina, or somewhere else local, family weekend getaways can be spontaneous-pack the snacks, pack the first aid kid, and go.
