Travel is where a membership either pays for itself in one trip or quietly does nothing for a year. The difference is not the size of any single discount — it is whether the saving attaches to things you were going to book anyway. A room, a rental car and the occasional cruise are exactly that, which is why membership travel discounts tend to be the first benefit people actually use.
What follows is organised by the order you book in rather than by partner, because that is how the savings stack. One trip usually touches two or three of these.
Two ways the discount reaches you
This is worth understanding before you compare anything, because it changes where you book. Some benefits run through a single travel desk that searches across hotel brands for you. Others are negotiated rates you claim by booking directly with the partner and identifying yourself as a member.
The desk is faster when you do not care which chain you stay with. Booking direct is better when you already know the brand, because the member hotel rates negotiated with each chain are usually the deeper ones and they stack with that chain’s own loyalty points. Neither is wrong; using only one of them is what leaves money on the table.
Booking the room
AARP Travel Center Powered by Expedia
The one-stop option. It searches hotels the way any booking site does, with member rates layered on top of the public price, and it covers chains including Choice, Wyndham and Best Western in the same results. Use it when you are comparing a city rather than a brand.
Best Western Hotels & Resorts
A direct member rate across several thousand properties worldwide, plus bonus points on top for members who join the chain’s rewards programme. Best Western’s footprint skews to smaller towns and highway routes, which makes it the useful one on a driving trip rather than a city break.
Wyndham Hotels & Resorts
The deepest of the hotel discounts if you can commit. There is a member rate on flexible bookings and a considerably larger one on non-refundable stays booked at least a week ahead. If your dates are fixed, this is the single biggest hotel saving on the list.
Getting around, and getting away
Avis
Discounts on base rates, with the larger figure attached to paying at the time of booking. What makes it worth more than the headline is everything bundled alongside: a free upgrade a class, an additional driver at no charge, and a credit toward the next rental. The additional driver alone often covers the gap to a rival’s advertised price.
Budget
Essentially the same structure as above, since the two sit under the same parent, but the fleet and the branch network differ enough to be worth checking both. When one has nothing at the airport you want, the other frequently does. Treat these car rental discounts as one benefit with two front doors.
Holland America Line
The outlier here, because the benefit arrives as onboard credit rather than money off the fare. That suits cruising, where the fare is only part of what you spend — excursions, drinks and speciality dining all draw on the same credit. It applies across their Alaska, Caribbean, Mexico and Europe sailings.

Before you book
- Price the room both ways. Run the travel desk and the chain’s own site with the member rate applied, then take the lower one. They do not always agree, and the gap can go either direction.
- Check the cancellation terms before taking the deeper rate. The larger hotel discounts are attached to non-refundable bookings, which is fine for a fixed trip and expensive for a flexible one.
- Add the second driver at the counter. It is included, and it is the thing most people forget to claim because the rental site does not prompt for it.
- Book the cruise before the excursions. Onboard credit is easier to spend than to recover, so knowing the amount first changes what you book ashore.
What This Adds Up To
A single week away that involves a hotel and a rental car will usually recover a year’s membership on its own, and that is before any of the everyday benefits are counted. The sensible approach is to check the member rate as a reflex on anything travel-related rather than remembering it occasionally, because senior travel savings only work if they are applied consistently.
Every partner above is listed in one place by AARP, where the travel benefits are grouped by hotels, car rental and cruises rather than buried in a single list.
