The Vogue Club

Roaming is the part of a mobile plan nobody examines until the week before a trip, and by then the choice has usually been made for them. The headline is almost always the same — roaming included — and the number that actually matters sits further down the page. A plan with a roaming allowance is worth comparing on that number, because it varies more between tiers than anything else in the range.

On this range the allowance is built into the plan rather than sold as a travel add-on, and the spread runs from a few gigabytes to thirty-five.

What travels with each plan

The allowances differ sharply, and not always in proportion to the plan:

  • 35 GB — 24 Months Unlimited Plus and UK Plan Unlimited, the two largest allowances in the range.
  • 30 GB — 24 Month Unlimited, close behind and on the contract side.
  • 12 GB — National Plus 30 GB and the mid thirty-day tiers, comfortable for a week or two away.
  • 5 GB — UK Plan Smart 5 GB, which travels in full but is best suited to short trips.

Note that a plan with unlimited data at home does not mean unlimited data abroad. The roaming figure is a separate, capped number, and it is the one that governs what happens once you land.

The plans that travel best

These SIM plans for travelling in Europe carry the largest allowances across the border.

24 Months Unlimited Plus

At £24 a month, thirty-five gigabytes of roaming alongside unlimited data at home and unlimited international minutes. For someone who travels often and calls abroad while doing it, this plan answers both needs rather than one.

UK Plan Unlimited

The same thirty-five gigabyte roaming allowance at £12.50, without a contract attached. It suits people who travel in bursts and would rather not hold a two-year commitment between trips.

24 Month Unlimited

Thirty gigabytes abroad with unlimited data at home, at £18 a month. A small step down from the top tier, and more than most trips require.

National Plus 30 GB

Twelve gigabytes of roaming at £5, with unlimited UK calls and texts. This is the sensible middle for a fortnight away with ordinary use — maps, messaging and some video.

UK Plan Smart 5 GB

Five gigabytes at £3.50, and the whole allowance travels. For a weekend away or a short city break it is proportionally generous, and it pairs well with a phone that is mostly used for maps and messaging while abroad.

Where the coverage extends past the EU

Roaming inside the European Union has been regulated for years, which is why every operator advertises it and why it tells you very little. The interesting question is what happens at the edges — the countries just outside that bloc, where charges have a habit of reappearing without warning.

This range answers that directly. The prepaid pages carry an EU and Balkan roaming section alongside the standard EU policy, and the larger tiers extend to India as well as Europe. For anyone whose travel or family ties run beyond the EU border, that is the detail that decides whether a roaming SIM plan actually works on the ground or quietly stops at the frontier.

Making the allowance last

Download maps, playlists and anything else large before leaving, so the roaming allowance is spent on things that genuinely have to happen live. Drop video quality one step for the duration of the trip. And check your destination against the covered list rather than assuming, since coverage beyond the EU is where operators differ most.

Set the plan up before travelling rather than on arrival. Activation is quick, but it is considerably easier to do with a working connection than without one. Arriving with the line already active also means the maps and messaging you need in the first hour are working from the moment you land.

Before the trip

Match the allowance to the trip rather than to your usage at home. Thirty-five gigabytes covers an extended stay without thought, thirty suits most holidays, twelve is right for a fortnight, and five works for a weekend. The figure to compare is the roaming one, not the headline. All of them are listed at Lycamobile. thevougeclub.com publishes travel and connectivity guides through the year.
