The Vogue Club

International calling is usually sold as an extra. You buy a plan, then you buy a bolt-on, and the bolt-on runs out at a moment nobody can predict. A plan with international minutes included works the other way around: the minutes sit inside the plan from the start, so there is no second purchase and no separate balance to watch.

The detail that decides which plan to take is not how many gigabytes come with it. It is whether the international allowance is a fixed number of minutes or genuinely unlimited, because those two things suit very different callers.

Where the two ranges differ

RangeInternational minutesCommitmentSuits
Thirty-day plans100 minutes included as standardNone, renewed monthlyRegular but moderate calling
24 Month Unlimited100 minutes includedContractHeavy data, moderate calling
24 Months Unlimited PlusUnlimited international minutesContractLong or daily calls abroad

One hundred minutes is roughly three minutes a day. That covers a check-in call comfortably and does not come close to covering a long conversation several times a week. Knowing which of those describes you settles the choice quickly.

The plans in detail

These mobile plans for calling abroad all include the minutes rather than selling them separately.

24 Months Unlimited Plus

At £24 a month, the only plan in the range with unlimited international minutes rather than a fixed allowance. It also carries unlimited data and the largest roaming allowance of the group. If calls abroad are a daily habit rather than an occasional one, this is the plan the rest are measured against.

24 Month Unlimited

Unlimited data with 100 international minutes, at £18 a month. It suits someone whose usage is data-heavy but whose calling abroad is occasional — a weekly catch-up rather than a daily one.

UK Plan Unlimited

The thirty-day equivalent at £12.50, with unlimited data and the same 100 international minutes, but without a contract. The obvious choice for someone who wants the larger allowance without committing for two years.

UK Plan Super Extra 75 GB

Seventy-five gigabytes at £7.50, unlimited UK calls and texts, and the standard 100 international minutes. It sits at the point where the data allowance stops being the limiting factor for most people.

National Plus 30 GB

Thirty gigabytes at £5, with unlimited UK calls and texts and the same 100 international minutes. It is the smallest plan here that still carries a full data allowance, which makes it the practical floor for someone who calls abroad but does not need a large amount of data.

Why bundled minutes beat bolt-ons

A bolt-on is a separate purchase with a separate expiry, and the two rarely line up neatly with each other. Most people discover the add-on has lapsed at the point they try to use it, which is precisely the wrong moment. Minutes built into the plan renew on the same cycle as everything else, so there is one date to think about instead of two.

There is also a quieter benefit. Because the minutes are already paid for, there is no hesitation before making the call — no mental arithmetic about whether this particular conversation is worth starting. For anyone keeping in touch with family in another country, that removal of friction is the actual point of an international calling plan, more than any headline number.

Checking the destinations first

Included minutes are not the same as universal coverage, and the destinations on the list matter more than the size of the allowance. Check the country you actually call before comparing anything else, because a large allowance to the wrong places is worth less than a small one to the right ones.

It is also worth separating landlines from mobiles in your own head. Landlines abroad have historically been the expensive ones, and they are also the numbers people talk on for longest, so they are where an included allowance earns its keep.

Making the call

If you speak to someone abroad most days, Unlimited Plus is the only plan here that genuinely removes the limit. If you call weekly, the 100 minutes bundled into every other plan will cover it, and the decision comes back to data and whether you want a contract. Either way the minutes are already in the plan. The full comparison sits at Lycamobile. More on getting the most from a mobile plan appears on thevougeclub.com.
