Four rings and a cupboard the size of a filing cabinet is the reality in most flats and a fair few houses, and it quietly changes what a good pan is. Capacity stops being the question. What matters is whether the set stacks, whether it works on the hob you actually have, and whether the coating survives being pulled in and out of a crowded cupboard twice a day. A well-chosen pan set answers all three.

The temptation in a small kitchen is to buy the largest set available on the theory that more is better. In practice the twelve-piece ends up with four pieces in daily use and the rest wedged behind them.

Four checks, in this order

  1. Confirm the hob type. If it is induction, the pan base must be magnetic or it will not heat at all. This is the most common and most expensive mistake, and it rules out whole ranges before you start comparing them.
  2. Check whether the set nests. Pans that stack inside one another take roughly a third of the cupboard space of pans that do not — worth more than an extra piece in a small kitchen.
  3. Measure against the hob, not the worktop. Long handles collide on a compact four-ring hob, and a handle sitting over a lit ring is both a burn risk and a warped handle waiting to happen.
  4. Count what you really cook with. Most households use one frying pan and two saucepans for the overwhelming majority of meals. Build from there rather than from the box contents.

Six sets worth a look

These run from a focused three-piece to full five-piece sets. Each of these non stick pans is aluminium-bodied, which keeps the weight manageable when a full pan has to be lifted off a back ring.

Scoville Neverstick Non-stick Aluminium 5 Piece Pan Set

A complete five-piece covering frying and saucepan duties in one purchase, with a non-stick coating built to stay effective rather than degrade through the first year. This is the straightforward answer when you are equipping a kitchen from nothing and would rather make one decision than four.

Scoville Neverstick Non-stick Aluminium 3 Piece Saucepan Set

Saucepans only, in three graduated sizes, which is the more intelligent buy when your frying pan is still good. Replacing only the part that has worn out keeps the cupboard from filling with duplicates.

Scoville Ultra Lift Non-stick Aluminium 4+1 Piece Pan Set

A four-plus-one configuration rather than a straight five, and noticeably lighter in the hand. Weight matters more than people expect once a pan is full and has to be tipped — this is the set for anyone who finds heavy stainless or cast iron awkward to manage at the sink.

Essentials Aluminium 5 Piece Pan Set

A pared-back five-piece that does the core jobs without taking a whole cupboard or a long decision. Sensible for a first flat, a rental or a second kitchen where the pans need to work rather than impress.

Brabantia Non-Stick Aluminium Sage 5 Piece Pan Set

Full five-piece coverage in a sage colourway rather than plain metal. Worth the consideration if the kitchen has open shelving or a hanging rail, where the pans are part of the room rather than hidden behind a door.

Tower Smart Start Classic Non-Stick Aluminium 5 Piece Pan Set

A classic profile with straight sides and conventional proportions, covering everyday cooking across five pieces. The familiar shape, for anyone who would rather not relearn how a pan behaves.

If the budget only stretches to one piece, a single good frying pan gets more use than any other item in the set.

A short cupboard checklist

  • Let pans cool before washing; a hot base plunged into cold water warps and then rocks on the ring forever after
  • Put a tea towel between nested pans so the coatings are not grinding together every time the door opens
  • Store lids upright in a rack rather than on the pans, which is what makes a stack impossible to lift out
  • Keep the one pan you use daily at the front, even if it breaks up the set

Wrapping It Up

Confirm the hob type, then buy the smallest set that covers what you genuinely cook. A tight five-piece that fits the cupboard beats a twelve-piece that does not, and a set of well-kept kitchen pans will see out several kitchens if the coating is looked after.

Dunelm stocks the full range and filters it by hob compatibility, so induction households can rule out the wrong sets first.
