The shirt that works all day is rarely the smartest one you own. It is the one that does not crease into a map by three o’clock, does not need tucking in to look deliberate, and does not look like office uniform the moment you leave the office. An organic cotton button down shirt in the right weight does all three without any effort on your part.

Weight is the whole decision here, and the range splits cleanly in two. Get that right and the rest is colour.

Light or heavy — pick a side

At roughly 5 to 6-oz. you have a shirt in the traditional sense: worn tucked or untucked, layered under a jacket, ironed in a minute. At 12-oz. and up you have something closer to a light jacket that happens to button down the front, meant to be worn open over a tee or on its own when it is cold enough.

Neither is better. But buying a heavyweight expecting a dress shirt, or the reverse, is the usual mistake, and no amount of pressing fixes it.

Six shirts worth owning

All organic cotton, all with flat-felled seams that survive washing. The lighter pair below is for wearing under things; the heavier four are for wearing over them. Each of these men’s oxford shirts and overshirts earns its place differently.

The Jack in Blue Everyday Oxford

  • 6-oz. organic cotton, washed soft before it reaches you
  • Button-down collar that holds its roll without stays
  • No back pleats, so it irons flat in one pass
  • Single rounded chest pocket

The one to buy first. Blue oxford goes under a jacket on Monday and over a tee on Saturday, and the absence of pleats is the detail you notice every time you iron it.

The Jack in Timber Houndstooth

  • 5-oz. organic cotton, lighter again
  • Woven houndstooth rather than a printed pattern
  • Same button-down collar and chest pocket

The pattern does the work that a plain shirt needs an accessory for. Light enough for a warm room, and the houndstooth is woven in, so it will not fade off the surface.

The Division Shirt in Washed Indigo

  • 12.5-oz. organic cotton, heavily washed
  • Sashiko weave with real depth to the indigo
  • Two mitered chest pockets with button-through flaps
  • Pen sleeve in the left pocket

This is the shirt that reads as outerwear. The heavy wash has already taken the stiffness out, and the indigo will keep shifting for years.

The Division Shirt in Cypress

  • Same 12.5-oz. sashiko construction in a muted green
  • Mitered cuff and reinforced interior collar stitching

The quieter version. Green sits between a neutral and a colour, which makes it easier to wear with denim than another blue would be.

The Division Shirt in Black Indigo

  • 12-oz., marginally lighter than the others
  • Black indigo yarns that fade toward charcoal

The most formal of the heavyweights. Black indigo ages into a soft charcoal rather than going patchy, so it stays presentable longer than black cotton usually does.

The Cutter Overshirt in Buzzard Check

  • 12.5-oz. organic cotton sashiko in a check
  • Same twin flap pockets and pen sleeve

Cut as an overshirt rather than a shirt, so it sits looser through the body and takes a knit underneath without pulling.

Getting more wear out of them

Wash cold and hang dry. The heavyweights in particular lose their hand in a hot tumble dryer, and they dry fast enough on a hanger that it costs you nothing.

Leave the heavyweights unbuttoned over a plain tee. They were cut with room for a layer, and buttoning one to the neck wastes the shape it was given.

Keep one light shirt pressed and ready at all times. The point of a washed cotton shirt that irons in a single pass is that it takes the decision out of a rushed morning.

The Short Version

One light oxford and one heavyweight cover almost everything between a desk and a dinner table. Add the patterned light shirt if you want a second option that needs no thought, and a check overshirt if your winters are mild enough to use one as a jacket.

The full shirt range sits on Taylor Stitch, where the fabric weights are listed on every product so you can tell the two families apart at a glance.
